Gardening: In The Beginning
I have enjoyed gardening for many years.
It’s a family activity started by my mother, Maggie, in our Hamlin Park home in the early ’60s. My parents moved from South Carolina during the Great Migration.
My dad, Willie—a master barber, Korean War veteran, and community leader—and my mom, an LPN, then a stay-at-home mom with four children, and eventually earning a Master’s as a Reading Specialist for children K–8. For leisure, she loved her flower and vegetable garden.
All four siblings and their children love gardening too.
Now we have a recent recruit over the past few years. My daughter, Sara, has become more and more excited about plants, flowers and gardening design. It has been such a joy watching her interest "blossom" and come to life!

We are grateful to have the opportunity to fully participate in the East Side Garden Walk this year.
Neighbors came by to admire the flowers and vegetables. Also, a terrific photographer came by on Sunday (Derek Brim) and just made our day!
The online photos are so beautiful! We appreciate how organized and timely everything was handled leading up to the big weekend. Thank you to all those who worked together to lead this effort. Sara and I cannot wait until next year’s East Side Garden Walk!
