Ellen Biddle Shipman (1869-1950)
Shipman was a renowned American landscape architect known for her formal gardens and lush planting style. She dictated the style of the time and strongly influenced landscape design as a member of the first generation to break into the largely male occupation. Shipman also designed gardens locally for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Graycliff, Mina Miller Edison (wife Thomas Edison) in Chautauqua, and the Knox Farm in East Aurora.
